Seattle Boat Insurance
Buying Seattle Boat Insurance
If you own a boat here in Seattle, make sure you get Seattle Boat Insurance and you will want to make sure and get what is called watercraft coverage. Most people don’t think of insurance when they are budgeting themselves to buy a boat. You might not even realize that boat insurance in Seattle is available. But you can’t claim stupidity when you have a boating accident, just like you can’t when you get in a car wreck.
Plain and simple, you need to purchase boat insurance if you own a boat. There are things that you should know before you make this purchase though.
Many cities like Seattle now require that you have watercraft insurance on your boat. This provides coverage against damages of personal injury, damage to your boat, and damage to other property you have cause harm to. Not to mention that boat theft is up. Whether you dock your boat at a slip or bring it home on a trailer, your boat is almost easier to steal than a car. Good boat insurance will also cover sinking, vandalism, and fire. Make sure to ask your insurance agent what the policy actually covers and don’t assume it does just because you have “full coverage”.
Another type of optional insurance you should consider is “wreckage removal” insurance. You are required by law to remove your craft from the water in the event it sinks. That means more money out of your pocket. Push the financial burden onto the insurance company for a couple of dollars a month. It is well worth it.
If your craft doesn’t sink, but has a mechanical failure, you can also purchase towing insurance just like you can for your car. But unlike walking on the road, you most likely can’t swim to the nearest repair station.
Not Just Seattle Boat Owners
Most Seattle insurance companies won’t cover just anyone who drives your boat. You need to ask your agent about this also. It should cost more money to add this coverage and if it does, it shouldn’t be that much more. Again, just cover all of the different scenarios and you should be fine.
If you currently have other insurance coverage with a Seattle agent, you might want to call them first. They might be able to give you additional discounts or “multi rate”. You can also you’re your current company about a cheaper insurance quote you received and they might bend over backwards to match it. I’m sure they don’t want you to take all of your business to the other company.
Think about how much you have spent for your boat and what it would cost you by NOT having insurance to cover yourself. I’m sure that repairing or replacing your boat is the last thing you want to worry about when you are on the open waters enjoying your toy.
